"My hubby and I love lattes and au laits and drink them daily. Getting pricey at the coffee shop, so we explored getting a semi- or a fully automatic machine. I could stomach spending $800-$1000 if I felt confident I wouldn't be repairing the thing every two years, but we never found a model that made coffee we liked that had good reviews. I read in Cook's Illustrated a review of the predecessor of the ROK, the Presso, and immediately went to buy it, only to find it no longer on the market. I was excited when the newly revamped Presso (the ROK) debuted, and ordered one on Amazon. Made my first test run with it yesterday, using some finely ground dark roast organic Indonesian coffee that I absolutely hate. It's not "cheap" coffee, but I just find the flavor harsh and burnt tasting using our Bialetti Mokka pot. I figured I would "waste" this coffee on my trial run. Wow - I could not believe how smooth and rich that shot came out! Made a second latte this morning using the same coffee and I am so impressed with what smooth, flavorful coffee the ROK makes.
It's very easy to put together, clean and use. I love the fact that you can vary the amount of water you use to make a traditional double strength shot or just some smooth, super strong coffee for making a cafe au lait or Americano. The only thing I don't love about it is that the "water chute" is pretty sealed and it takes a long time to dry. Same deal with the porta filter. We have hard well water so I can't have stuff sitting wet for hours. Thus, I have to go thru the slightly inconvenient step of taking out the silicon filter on the water chute and dissembling the porta filter to really let them dry. If you don't have hard water, you probably don't need to do that but every once in awhile to give everything a thorough cleaning. For some reason the box did not contain any cleaning instructions, but they have a step by step on their website.
I hate cluttering up my counters with appliances, but this thing looks cute! I am certain everyone who visits will be like "what is THAT!?" It 0% looks like a coffee maker! The supposedly decorative tin it comes with is way, way bigger than it needs to be, so won't be wasting counter space with that. It'd be nice if they'd lower the price a bit and eliminate the tin. It's chintzy thin and arrived with lots of little dents. The instructions even mention how easy it is to dent the tin and act like it's a feature that will give your tin "character". Uh huh."
