Read what Amazon.com customer said :

"My hubby and I love lattes and au laits and drink them daily. Getting pricey at the coffee shop, so we explored getting a semi- or a fully automatic machine. I could stomach spending $800-$1000 if I felt confident I wouldn't be repairing the thing every two years, but we never found a model that made coffee we liked that had good reviews. I read in Cook's Illustrated a review of the predecessor of the ROK, the Presso, and immediately went to buy it, only to find it no longer on the market. I was excited when the newly revamped Presso (the ROK) debuted, and ordered one on Amazon. Made my first test run with it yesterday, using some finely ground dark roast organic Indonesian coffee that I absolutely hate. It's not "cheap" coffee, but I just find the flavor harsh and burnt tasting using our Bialetti Mokka pot. I figured I would "waste" this coffee on my trial run. Wow - I could not believe how smooth and rich that shot came out! Made a second latte this morning using the same coffee and I am so impressed with what smooth, flavorful coffee the ROK makes.

It's very easy to put together, clean and use. I love the fact that you can vary the amount of water you use to make a traditional double strength shot or just some smooth, super strong coffee for making a cafe au lait or Americano. The only thing I don't love about it is that the "water chute" is pretty sealed and it takes a long time to dry. Same deal with the porta filter. We have hard well water so I can't have stuff sitting wet for hours. Thus, I have to go thru the slightly inconvenient step of taking out the silicon filter on the water chute and dissembling the porta filter to really let them dry. If you don't have hard water, you probably don't need to do that but every once in awhile to give everything a thorough cleaning. For some reason the box did not contain any cleaning instructions, but they have a step by step on their website.

I hate cluttering up my counters with appliances, but this thing looks cute! I am certain everyone who visits will be like "what is THAT!?" It 0% looks like a coffee maker! The supposedly decorative tin it comes with is way, way bigger than it needs to be, so won't be wasting counter space with that. It'd be nice if they'd lower the price a bit and eliminate the tin. It's chintzy thin and arrived with lots of little dents. The instructions even mention how easy it is to dent the tin and act like it's a feature that will give your tin "character". Uh huh."

Espresso machine types

There are 4 types of espresso makers,

Manual Espresso Maker
No need to use electricity. Very interesting. You can see it here. Now, this type of espresso maker become more popular.

Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines
Use a pump rather than manual force to deliver water. The remaining brew pressure in the basket is released via a three-way valve.

Steam Espresso Machines
A steam-driven unit operates by forcing water through the coffee by using steam or steam pressure. The first espresso machines were steam types, produced when a common boiler was piped to four group heads so that multiple types of coffee could be made at the same time. This design is still used today in low-cost consumer machines, as it does not need to contain moving parts.

Super-Automatic Espresso Machines

machines automatically grind the coffee, tamp it, and extract the espresso shot. The operator only has to fill the bean hopper and, if the machine is not connected to a water line, add water to a reservoir. Some models contain an automated milk frothing and dispensing device. Super-automatic machines take away the ability to manually tamp and grind the coffee, which may affect the quality of the espresso

How to make an espresso at home without a machine

If you never made an espresso without an espresso machine before, then this short tips is for you. But please note that, i'm not talking about make an espresso for a drink, make an espresso in this article is refer to an espresso coffee for a desert.

You could go to your local coffee bar and ask for a double shot to go as if its going into a recipe then use that. If you're using it in a recipe it shouldn't matter too much. A spoonful of instant coffee dissolved within 1oz of hot water would make the something similar to espresso.

If you need fresh espresso (i.e. serving directly to people) then I would recommended a stove top brewer or invest in a "true" espresso machine and enjoy.

Interms of what time of coffee beans to go for try a blend like After Dinner. Coffee from Central America would be good. Avoid Colombian as it tends to be sweet and may become very sickly in a sweet desert.

Espresso is made with boiling water pressured through coffee grinds. The machine does the pressure part. Even a stove-top espresso pot functions the same. Without water being pressured through the coffee grinds, it is not possible to get the concentrated form of coffee, otherwise known as espresso.

To make a proper espresso, you need a machine that can produce at least 9bar of pressure. If you are only using it for a recipe you can use a powdered instant espresso coffee that they sell at most supermarkets since you only need the flavor.

I suggest you buy an espresso maker, but if you just want to make it for a desert, you can follow the step above.
